Robyn McKenzie

Robyn is the Senior Librarian at St Patrick’s College, Launceston. The Mary MacKillop Library caters for approximately 1400 students and 150 staff and is the largest 7‐12 independent school in Tasmania. The College will move to a 1:1 computer ratio by the end of 2011. The College will also open a separate Grade 9 campus Term 1 2012.

The Library has over many years looked to develop its presence in an online environment. We ensure all staff and students are able to access the Library’s online resources 24×7. Our current website is Version 2.0 and uses the open‐source Joomla product with some purchased add‐ons. It can be found at: The Library’s commitment in this area extends to employing an in‐house web and graphic designer for 10 hours every week.

The website provides Remote Patron Authentication access to a range of online indexes and a Library compiled eReserve area. Statistics indicate both are well utilised and justify the cost and/or effort of maintaining them. The Library also subscribes and launches through their online catalogue Syndetics Enriched Content, Thorpe Bowker’s LibraryThing for Libraries and their Virtual Shelf Browser.

Research for the use of eBooks is another step in this process. As of Term 2 2010 we have made available a small selection of Facts On File eBooks which are distributed in PDF format. This was considered an interim step toward a more attractive and interactive array of ebooks. It has proved a frustrating exercise and currently a product that provides a range of resources, in a digital format for young adult readers in an Australian school is proving elusive. Consideration has been given to distributing eBooks via PDAs, such as Kindle or iPad, but content and copyright have prevented this so far.
